Mining’s next chapter: resilience, responsibility, and renewal

Anne Thatcher Senior Vice President, Mining
The global mining sector is undergoing significant change. As the energy transition picks up pace and we diversify away from dependence on China for critical minerals, there’s an encouraging momentum toward a brighter future. Resilience, responsible sourcing, and finding new ways to be sustainable. This is what the sector needs.
In this quarter’s editorial, we look at what that shift demands in practice—from building stronger lifecycle discipline and reducing long-term exposure, to using digital monitoring to keep critical assets performing in remote, high-risk environments.
What was once a purely extractive industry is now central to enabling a low-carbon future—something that’s recognized by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). The organization states that “to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the World Economic Forum estimates that 3 billion tons of metal will be required – equivalent to the weight of 300,000 Eiffel Towers. Mining plays a crucial role in fulfilling this need.”
Even so, the industry’s role in the transition comes with a responsibility to operate transparently and with clear accountability, which is why ICMM plays a central role in reshaping the public perception of mining—emphasizing environmental stewardship, climate responsibility, and water management.
Indeed, membership or alignment with ICMM is a key marker of responsible practice, and I’m pleased to say that our services and values adhere to its principles on sustainability, biodiversity, and resilience. Many of our clients also align to the same standards.
Unlocking value through asset management
For Arcadis, this moment in time represents both a challenge and an opportunity. That’s why we’re helping mining clients navigate today’s transformation with greater confidence and control.
Whether it’s designing and engineering large-scale capital projects, rethinking water management in regions facing scarcity or flood risk, or modernizing operations through digital platforms like Enableon, our role is to unlock greater value and secure the future of mining. And we’ll do it by leveraging our deep expertise in a number of key areas.
Our capability in tailings management, for example, is anchored in the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management (GISTM), where we act as engineers of record for major facilities. Similarly, our geochemical specialists are advancing circular mining by recovering critical minerals from waste and tailings—turning legacy materials into new sources of value.
It’s fair to say that asset lifecycle management (ALM) has become a defining theme. Because for many mining organizations, the focus is now on managing legacy assets—particularly those inherited through mergers and acquisitions—to reduce liabilities and environmental risk.
Arcadis’ role in driving positive change
Through our integrated ALM approach, Arcadis supports clients in assessing, maintaining, repurposing, or responsibly retiring older facilities—helping them make informed decisions that balance performance, risk, and sustainability.
What’s more, as the industry continues to evolve, we aim to stand alongside the most trusted names in mining—recognized not just for technical excellence, but for our ability to deliver holistic, end-to-end solutions that accelerate decarbonization, enable digital transformation, and promote sustainable growth.
As expectations rise—from investors, regulators, communities, and customers—responsible mining will be measured by outcomes, not intent. The organizations that move early will be best placed to lead with credibility and sustain momentum through the transition. Arcadis can help clients translate these priorities into structured action across the full asset lifecycle.
